This stunning 18th-century bench is crafted in the Louis XIV design style. Louis XIV (r. 16431715), known as the “Sun King,” centralized power in the French monarchy. He reigned over a period of unprecedented prosperity where France became a leader in the sciences and arts, and became the dominant power in Europe. One of the most enduring and popular forms of the Louis XIV style is the jardin à la française, or the French formal garden. This is based on symmetry and the idea of inflicting order on nature. The jardin à la française style is clearly used on this bench, which features elegantly detailed floral carvings that swirl down each of the four cream-coloured legs and across the sides of the bench. The bench is symmetrical, and this balanced appearance is generally viewed as more aesthetically pleasing than a disproportionate counterpart. Brass-coloured beads frame the seat, adding a touch of royal sumptuousness. The piece has been newly upholstered in fine Ukrainian cloth, featuring sophisticated blue lines that run down the centre of the seat. This regal piece of furniture will be an opulent and grand addition to your home.

At this time in France, The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was set by France’s National Constituent Assembly in 1789, during the French Revolution. Inspired by Enlightenment philosophers and influenced by the doctrine of “national right,” the Declaration was a core values statement and civil rights document, stating that the rights of men were universal, valid everywhere and at all times. It stated that each citizen should be protected equally by the law. Still a current document, the Declaration majorly impacted the development of popular conceptions of individual liberty and democracy throughout the Western World.
