Cold beers are made even better when served in interesting glasses, such as this classic ceramic beer stein, made in Germany in the 1930s. For centuries, Germany has been producing ‘stoneware’ (ceramic objects of all kinds) for use in daily life. Stoneware was, for a long time, purely practical. Steins, for example, were made with a wide base stability. During the 16th and 17th centuries, however, these objects also became symbols of luxury, through the addition of elements such as pewter lids – as can be seen on this stein. Here, the shape of the pewter lid is reminiscent of a bell, and features minimalistic, abstract details. The thumb lift, shaped like the head of a guitar, is composed of c-scrolls, echoing the patterns on the lid. The stein itself is decorated with two German inscriptions, and a scene of a musician and two attentive listeners, all of which are framed by sinuous lines, c-scrolls, and foliage. Cheers to your next drink in a piece of German culture and history!

At this time in Germany, Berlin hosted the 1936 Summer Olympics, now sometimes called the Nazi Olympics. Reich Führer Adolf Hitler (18891945) saw the Games as an opportunity to promote his government and personal ideals of antisemitism and racial supremacy. The 1936 Olympics were the first to be televised, with radio broadcasts reaching 41 countries. This would be the last Olympic Games for 12 years, due to the imminent Second World War.
