This early 19th-century Chinese famille rose porcelain teapot has an attractive twisted handle and beautiful hand painted details. Famille rose porcelain wares are characterized by the various shades of rose colours that accentuate individual pieces and make them popular collector’s items. Apart from pink, a range of other soft colour palettes were employed to decorate famille rose porcelains. Noticeably, this teapot makes use of an assortment of hues, including yellow, green, mauve and vivid blue. These colours were first introduced to the Chinese from Europe in the late 17th century and by the 1720s, they were favored over the translucent famille verte overglaze colours adopted during Kangxi’s reign (1661–1722). Over the next century, the creation of famille rose porcelain wares also overtook the production of blue and white porcelains in China. As the production of famille rose porcelains increased, recognizable forms of decorative patterns emerged. This teapot exemplifies the Rose Canton style, as it contains representations of flowers and insects exclusively. A few scuff marks are visible along the belly of the teapot, and its missing lid has been replaced by a wooden one to make this an operative piece.

At this time in history in China the Bible was first published in Chinese. It was also the time of the First Opium War: The Qing dynasty and the United Kingdom signed the Treaty of Nanking, under which the former agreed to end the monopoly of the Cohong, pay reparations for the war and the destruction of opium, and cede Hong Kong Island in perpetuity.
