This attractive Dutch side table with folding leaves dates from the 19th century. It is made of a lovely flamed mahogany and paired with a finely grained oak. Mahogany wood has long been one of the prevalent choices for making furniture. Used to build impressive ships and cabinetry, mahogany became the essential wood for furniture making in the 18th century. However, by the end of the century, while the demand for mahogany products kept growing, supplies of this prized wood became increasingly rare. As such, this handmade side table was created at a time when mahogany trees were hard to come by, elevating its status as a fine antique piece. This ideally sized regency side table is raised on four delicate curvilinear legs. The table contains a drawer and can be used to store stationery or valuables, while maintaining its neat, elegant appearance. This piece remains in its original state, and like all mahogany furniture, is particularly durable. A beautiful side table, it would command a room whether displayed against a wall, next to a sofa set, or in the middle of a living space.

At this time in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom of the Netherlands (18151839) was created in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars (18031815). Territory that had originally belonged to the former Dutch Republic, Austrian Netherlands, and Prince-Bishopric of Liege were combined to form a buffer state between the major European Powers. The new country was a constitutional monarchy, yet the king retained significant control over the government. The polity collapsed in 1830 with the outbreak of the Belgian Revolution.
