Crafted in an elegant design, the top of these 20th-century candlesticks feature a simple sconce and capital. The stem of the candlesticks, accentuated by rows of small silver beads, gracefully tapers down to a base of the same style. Underneath the base, a silversmith’s makers mark can be seen – a small shield featuring the letters N.S. CO., and the words “sterling weighted.” “Sterling weighted” is a common inscription for practical items made of silver; it indicates the object contains another type of material to give it weight and increase its stability. The N.S. CO shield is likely the maker’s mark for “Newburyport Silver Company,” founded in Newburyport, Massachusetts in 1902. The company eventually moved to Keene, New Hampshire and enjoyed success until closing in 1915. As part of a long history of mining and silver in the United States, this lovely pair of candlesticks is sure to add a touch of elegance and history to any mantlepiece or dinner table in your home.

At this time in history, the 20th century began with economic success for New Hampshire, due in part to a booming textile industry and the successful establishment of major railroads in the 19th century. World War I (1914–1918) and the great depression however, greatly impacted this success. It was not until World War II (1939–1945) and the need for textile production that their economy would begin to recover.
