This bench is a lovely example of a 19th-century Flemish piano stool made of mahogany wood. The rich reddish-brown colour of the wood catches the eye and characterizes this stool as a quality furniture piece. The triangular-shaped base gives the bench a strong foundation and enables sitters to distribute their weight evenly when utilizing the stool. The pillow at the top displays fine beadwork highlighting a variety of floral and vegetal patterns. The colours employed to design the beadwork – yellows, greens, whites, and browns – complement the mahogany wood. The pillow is stuffed with horsehair making the padding particularly comfortable for sitters. A nice antique stool that can be used to sit and play the piano, or function as a decorative piece in a variety of other settings.

At this time in history in Flanders Belgium had just gained independence from the Netherlands. The ruling French speaking Walloons  from the south of Belgium tried to force the people of Flanders to speak French, but they still proudly speak Dutch to this day. César Franck (1822–1890) was born in Liège in 1822 and became a prominent pianist and composer. Could this have been his stool?
