This elegant lamp, made in the 19th century, recalls the style of Art Nouveau – a form of art making that was popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The style, often seen in the applied arts of the time, plays with natural elements, which is expressed here in the beautiful gilt iron and alabaster flowers growing from the lamp’s base. The base is made of two tiers; the first is made of gilt wood, with a crimped edge. The second is made of alabaster, with a wider, rounded foot, a narrower neck, and a slightly wider top, detailed with incisions around the edge. Each of the three flowers on the lamp is made of this same pearly-white alabaster. The fine stems and delicate, thin leaves that curve gently in various directions, are also reminiscent of Art Nouveau’s distinctive use of sinuous lines and create a soft movement in the overall design. The lampshade, made of a soft khaki green fabric with small white embroidered accents, features a knife pleated pattern. The sharp lines offer variety to the object’s appearance. This lamp is sure to make a bright addition to any desk or table in your home.

At this time in Italy, Napoleon I (17691821) crowned himself King of Italy on May 23, 1805 at the Duomo di Milano. He took the title “Emperor of the French and King of Italy” at this time, signifying his political and military dominance over the Italian peninsula.
