Much like the work of the impressionists in France, artist Bertha Linares’s use of quick, short brush strokes in the foliage of the painting and the play of light and shadows captures a single moment on a warm afternoon; one can almost hear the gentle rustle of leaves in the wind when looking at this work. The warm, natural hues of greens, yellows, browns, and whites create a unified landscape, while the bright reddish orange of the parasol draws the viewer’s eye to the figure in the foreground. The gentle gaze of the figure, looking at the landscape ahead, inspires a moment of contemplation for the viewer. This moment is enhanced by the quietness of the composition, created by having only a single figure enjoying the moment. This beautiful work is sure to brighten any sitting room, even on the rainiest of days. This oil painting is signed at the bottom right and measures 34 x 27 inches.

At this time in France, the Third Republic was proclaimed on September 4, 1870. However, it took several years before the Republic was universally accepted. Social and political unrest hampered the country until the new constitution was firmly instituted in Versailles in January 1875. The Third Republic held firm until July 1940, before giving way to the Vichy government during WWII.
