Red sky at night, sailor’s delight! This charming watercolour landscape painting with pastels by Steven Scott (1938–) captures a pink evening sky overlooking a charming farmhouse and silo with low hanging clouds. The layers of warm-toned watercolours encapsulate the mood of a summer sunset; it’s almost as if you can feel the warm breeze on your skin, smell the rich earthy land, and hear the crinkle of the leaves swaying in the wind. The loose, painted brushstrokes are heightened by the more detailed swipes of pastel, adding texture and visual variance to the artwork. This painting is one of three available artworks by Scott – all of which depict different variations on sunset landscapes. The three works are unified by having the same sumptuous and textured gold frames. Although there is not much information available about Scott’s artistic practice, this lovely landscape comes from Helen Mazelow (1927–2005), who was an art buyer for Sears along with Vincent Price (1911–1993). At this time in Canada, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC)  proposed the construction of a subway line, to assist with the congestion of traffic along Yonge Street. The plan for Canada’s first subway line was approved by voters in 1946, and opened in 1954. Today, Line 1 Yonge-University, is one of the busiest subway lines in North America.
