This lovely Chinese ceramic dish, nestled in a round frame of deep red wood, features two figures, likely mother and child, seated under a large leafy tree. The figures look ahead toward the landscape in front of them, where an animal – perhaps a deer or a hare – has buried its head in a stream. Tucked behind the animal are three, carefully placed pieces of bamboo, towards which a few butterflies fly. This serene moment is beautifully rendered in earthy hues, with light accents of orange and blue, and is completed by an inscription at the centre-left of the work. While made in the 19th century, this piece is part of a long history of ceramics in China. Over the course of centuries, Chinese ceramics have been made for national and international export and have greatly influenced the ceramics produced in countries such as the Netherlands and Italy. Whether displayed on a mantle, on a sideboard, or anywhere else in your home, this ceramic work will bring your dwelling a touch of history and elegance.

At this time in China, trade grew rapidly. Consequently, western presence also increased, particularly through trade groups such as the British East India Trading Company. Mid-19th century China faced major wars, such as the two Opium wars of 1839–1842 and 1856–1860. This was also the last complete century in which China was ruled by a dynasty; the Qing Dynasty, established in 1644, came to an end in 1912, and China became a republic.
