This bold and eye-catching 19th-century rectangular mirror powerfully represents the United States of America. The bald eagle, rendered in gold on the top third of the mirror, is America’s national bird and serves as one of the country’s symbols. In ancient times, Roman legions used eagles as their symbol or ‘standard,’ and considered the animal to be synonymous with strength. William Barton (17481831), a revolutionary war hero, included the eagle when he designed the seal of the United States in 1782, saying: “the eagle is the symbol of supreme power and authority, signifies congress, and the olive branch and arrows that it [the eagle] holds in its talons are the powers of peace and war.” The gold olive branches and arrows on the top of this object further represent American pride and strength. Opulent gold spheres enliven the frame of the mirror. This sculptural element adds symmetry and visual dynamism to the object. The wood that frames this rectangular mirror is rich and dark, and the glass centrepiece appears to be in good condition. This highly stylized mirror will be an object of beauty and potency in your home.

At this time in history, the boat 'America' wins the first Americas Cup yacht race in 1851.
